Introduction
The Ministry of Mines is emphasising strengthening the quality control ecosystem for the non-ferrous metal sector in the country. for that, the ministry is in constant consultation with BIS to prepare more QCO on upstream products [ refined metal ] in the non-ferrous metal value chain.
The development of mandatory QCO helps curb the import of sub-standard products, prevent unfair trade practices and ensure the supply of quality products to domestic consumers including industrial users. The notified QCO will ensure the standard and quality of aluminium metal and alloys, as well as copper and nickel, to the benefit of the user industry. At the same time, the QCO will ensure Indian product quality in these items akin to global standards and enhance the brand value of making in India in the international market.
Brief
On august 31 2023 ,Indian Ministry of Commerce & industry together with the Ministry of Mines published a new regulation for the quality control of aluminium & aluminium alloys.
Aluminium and similar products generally require BIS certification to be approved for import and trade in India.
The regulation only applies to materials that are produced and used domestically that are imported. Products for the export market are not affected. Certification is carried out by BIS.
According to the regulation of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the following aluminium and aluminium alloys mandate compulsory certification under the appropriate BIS IS certification and a corresponding mark [ IS mark ] for
- domestic production and import of aluminium and aluminium alloy [ ingots and casting ]
- High-purity primary aluminium ingot.
- Aluminium alloy ingots for bearings
- Primary aluminium ingots for remelting and aluminium ingots
- Billets and wire bars [ EC grade ]
Category for Certification
BIS certification for aluminium includes a diverse range of aluminium products as follows –
- Wrought aluminium plates, sheets, strips
- Corrugated aluminium sheets (lightweight)
- Composite panels
- Cast aluminium and its alloys
- Aluminium foil
Aluminium and alloy bars
Aluminium and its alloys are highly preferred in various industries due to their superior properties,, such as
- high strength-to-weight ratio
- corrosion resistance
- exceptional electrical, thermal conductivity
The ISI certification is solid evidence of the quality of products that meet the Indian Standards diversification, and the BIS is responsible for ensuring that the quality standards for aluminium and its diverse products are established and maintained.
Aluminium foil
Aluminium foil plays a vital role in modern packaging, from food to pharmaceuticals. ensuring the reliability and safety of aluminium foil products is paramount, leading to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) accreditation/ authorization. BIS has set stringent standards, such as IS 15392, to verify the quality and safety of aluminium foil before it can be sold in the country. This accreditation/ authorization is particularly crucial for the everyday household use of aluminium foil in food packaging, as it ensures that the material does not release harmful substances into the stored food, prioritizing consumer health and safety.
Cast Aluminium and its alloys – Ingots and Casting
To ensure BIS for cast aluminium and its alloys ministry of consumer affair adressed BIS standards IS 617 : 1994 , 1180 : 1987 , 6754 : 1972 , 2590 : 1987 , 4026 : 2023 establishes a comprehensive framework encompassing various quality parameters that aluminium ingots and castings must adhere to .
Cast aluminium alloys belong mainly to four systems based on
- Aluminium – silicon
- Aluminium – copper
- Aluminium – magnesium
- Aluminium – zinc
Adherence In
Automotive Industry: Utilized in engine components and wheels.
Bis certification process
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) establishes quality standards for aluminium and alloys through certifications like IS 736, IS 737, IS 21, IS 1254 and IS 17682. This ensures products meet specific benchmarks. The certification process involves:
- Standard Identification: Manufacturers need to recognize the relevant BIS standards to ensure the specific quality, safety, and performance requirements for the particular product that they have chosen.
- Application submission: The manufacturer submits a certification application to BIS providing details about the product and its specification and the desired certification mark
- Factory Inspection: BIS inspects the manufacturing production facility to assess quality control, infrastructure and adherence to relevant standards.
- Sample Testing: Product samples are tested in authorized BIS labs for compliance with BIS standards.
- Certification Decision: Based on test results and compliance with standards, BIS decides whether to grant certification to the product.
- Regular Monitoring: BIS monitors the manufacturing process of certified products through periodic audits and market surveillance to ensure ongoing compliance with quality control processes and BIS standard
BIS certification enhances consumer trust by ensuring products meet quality and safety standards.

- Aextruded bars and rods above 6 mm diameter, extruded angles, other sections and profiles including tubes, hollow sections of thickness, hollow sections of thickness 3mm and above.
- Rolled – plates, sheets of 3mm and above thickness.
Stakeholder involved in aluminium and alloy bars
The BIS ISI certification for aluminium and aluminium alloy bars is crucial for both manufacturers and consumers.
- manufacturers
The certification is tangible proof of product quality that can help them expand their market share.
- Consumers
The certification assures that the products they are purchasing meet the authorized standards and are safe and reliable to use
Criteria addressed by BIS for aluminium and alloy bars
IS 733, a standard specified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), outlines the criteria for manufacturing Aluminium and Aluminium alloy bars intended for general engineering purposes. Obtaining BIS ISI certification for these bars involves strict adherence to guidelines and specifications set by BIS, ensuring compliance with standards that cover crucial properties. under IS 733 for Aluminium and Aluminium alloy bars
Chemical Composition
- Manufacturers must ensure that the chemical composition of Aluminium and Aluminium alloy bars falls within specified limits.
- Elements such as copper, magnesium, zinc, silicon, and iron have defined percentage limits.
- These limits guarantee that the material possesses the desired properties for its intended application.
Mechanical Properties
- The mechanical properties, including tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness, should adhere to specified limits.
- Standardized test methods are employed to measure these properties, ensuring suitability for specific applications.
Dimensional Tolerances
- Dimensional tolerances for aspects like diameter, length, straightness, and surface finish must conform to set limits.
- These limits ensure the bars meet the required size, shape, and surface finish standards.
Manufacturing Process
- The manufacturing process, covering melting, casting, and hot or cold working, must result in a product that meets specified requirements.
- The process should avoid introducing defects that could impact the material’s performance.
Marking and Packaging
- Aluminium and Aluminium alloy bars must be marked with essential information such as grade, size, and heat number.
- Proper packaging is crucial to prevent damage during transportation and storage.
The general guidelines mentioned in IS 733 are designed to guarantee that Aluminium and Aluminium alloy bars meet the mandatory specifications and are suitable for their intended applications. Manufacturers must adhere to these guidelines diligently to ensure the quality and reliability of the products they produce, ultimately contributing to the overall safety and performance standards in engineering applications that must be met to obtain ISI certification.
